MRWA Trail Builds

More trail building info from the fine folks at MRWA:

We’re still rolling!

The weather has been hit and miss lately, with spectacular fall days punctuated by a couple of storms that have cost us a little build time. But great work has been done over the last few weeks anyways!

We’ve finished the first starter loop and are now midway through the 2nd. Once the ink dries on the landuse agreement from HRM, we will soon move to working on the entrance trail (to the Norawarren trailhead) and post signage. A Grand Opening is in sight!

Our official schedule for the next few weeks is the usual Thursday, Saturday, Sunday — With ONE exception: There will NOT be a general volunteer build day this Saturday. So the days are:

- Thursdays: Oct 27, Nov 3, Nov 10
- Saturdays. Nov 5 and 12
- Sundays. Oct 30, Nov 6, Nov 13

We start at 8:30 am and work until around 12:30 each day. Come for as much, or as short a time, as you are able. One day or multiples! We meet at Norawarren Drive. If we have to cancel because of precipitation we will send an email before 8:00 am and update the MRWA Facebook page. Cool weather isn’t usually an obstacle.

Bring gloves, water, sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing. We have tools but an extra lopper, shovel or Pulaski never hurt anyone.

We appreciate RSVPs to mrwa.volunteers@gmail.com so we can plan to keep you busy.

Thanks! See you in the woods.

You guys must be doing a good job. I’ve been there twice now on the trail and have seen no sight of any trails or construction - even when taking a peek at possible locations where I felt figured it might be.

I did stumble upon a tent at one spot - which is kind of creepy to be honest. Someone living there?

Where does one obtain the secret handshake for entry into said area?

LMR29r

@LetMeRide29er My understanding is that the trail head will be added last to try and keep people off the new trails till they are in state where riding them wont damage them in the long term.

@LetMeRide29er There’s no secret handshake, the trails just aren’t open to ride yet, the location is described on the MRWA Facebook page and website.

When you enter the woods off Norrawarren Dr. the trails can be tricky to find if you don’t know which way to go.

Happy to take anyone in if they want to have a look.

The HRM Lawyers have to sign off on the land/trail to access the actual trail. No secret handshake or evil clown business involved at all, just regular official city business.

New info from the MRWA facebook page:

We are still building! Here’s the updated schedule:
- Thursday, Nov 24
- Saturday, Nov 26
- Sunday, Nov 27 (A HIKE/SURVEY DAY. NOT BUILD)
- Thursday, Dec 1
- Saturday, Dec 3
- Sunday, Dec 4
Start time and location remain the same: 8:30 am at Norawarren Drive. We usually work until around 12:30 each day. Come for as much, or as short a time, as you are able. If we have to cancel because of weather we will send an email before 8:00 am and update the MRWA Facebook page. Steady rain or significant accumulations of snow will cause cancellation; otherwise we’re usually out building.
Bring gloves, water, sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing. We have tools but an extra lopper, shovel or Pulaski never hurt anyone. If you do bring a tool(s), best to label it and make sure you take it home…
HIKE ON NOV 27: More information will be posted about the hike a few days prior, but it will be 3-4hours and cover the entire route that will eventually connect Flat Lake to Herring Cove by singletrack trail. A couple km will be easy bushwacking. We’ll cross the river at the location where a bridge will be built; it’s a stepping stone crossing and, if your legs are short and/or the water is high, you may get a bit wet. That probably won’t be the case, though.
We appreciate RSVPs to mrwa.volunteers@gmail.com so we can plan to keep you busy, but realize that last minute decisions are a fact of life.
The more the merrier!

From the good folks at MRWA…

Hi everyone,
Spring is here and it’s trail building season again. Friday, a small group of MRWA Builders are going to the build site. We’re looking for extra hands. All are welcome.

Because it is the first trail build after the winter …… it may take a short time to get organized. We need to pick up the tools; carry the tools out and hope to get some lumber. We’ll be doing the usual grubbing and maybe woodwork.

Let’s start at 8:30 till 1pm or so. We are working a short way in from the trail head at Norawarren Drive off Herring Cove Road. This is the same location we used last Fall. If you haven’t been before, look for the grass park and mailboxes on the right side of Norawarren Drive.

Forecast calls for the possibility of showers. I plan on being there for the morning. Bring a snack if you want and water.

Thanks
